The team will be on hand at the event at Telford International Centre, Telford, to provide practical, research-led tips on everything from milk feeding volumes to calf milk replacer choice (CMR). R&D Manager Dr Jessica Cooke says it’s a great opportunity to find out if there are ways to make efficiencies in the calf-shed. “There’s a recent trend towards feeding very high calf milk replacer volumes, but our research shows that higher milk volumes – of over 1,050g milk solids per calf per day – do not deliver significant improvements in growth or health. In fact, it could be compromising performance at weaning and costing you more,” she explains. Dr Cooke also says there’s potentially big gains to be had by matching CMR choice with farm specific challenges and calf performance goals. This might mean choosing a CMR that includes additional health packages to support gut health and the immune system, such as garlic-derived products, the resin of coniferous trees or hydrolysed yeast. “For example, calves that are under challenge may benefit from being fed a CMR that includes whole milk protein which is highly digestible. This could be from concentrated whey protein or skim,” Dr Cooke says. For example, the CMR Imunogard is made from 100% dairy whey protein concentrate and includes the hydrolysed yeast culture Celmanax which helps improve gut function and mitigate the effects of some harmful pathogens.
