Husky Corporation Earns CARB Certification for Balance Vapor Recovery System Safe-T-Breaks
PACIFIC, MO (September 3, 2026) – Husky Corporation has announced that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has granted certification for the Model 3360VR reconnectable Safe-T-Break , clearing the way for its use in Enhanced Vapor Recovery (EVR) balance systems across California. The certification also includes the Model 5900, a non-reconnectable version of the same technology. The certification marks the culmination of a multi-year engineering and testing initiative designed to meet the nation’s most stringent environmental standards for fuel dispensing equipment. Engineering for Extreme Conditions
To achieve CARB EVR approval, Husky engineers implemented significant design enhancements to the existing 3360VR platform. These modifications ensure the hardware can withstand the high throughput demands and mechanical stresses typical of California refueling stations. Engineers focused on the integrity of the vapor valve. In a balance vapor recovery system, fuel flows through the center of a coaxial hose while vapors are returned to the underground storage tank through the outer chamber. “After a drive-away, the vapor valve in the safety break stays with the dispenser to keep the underground storage tank tight,” said Tim Schroeder, a product design engineer at Husky with 20 years of experience. “We redesigned the valve with new seals to ensure it shut properly and sealed consistently every time a separation occurs.”
Durability at High-Volume Sites
The 3360VR underwent a rigorous year-long field test at a high-volume Costco site. Because these locations utilize hose retractors to facilitate fueling from either side of a vehicle, the hardware is subjected to constant twisting and pulling. To address this, Husky added anti-rotation roll pins to the adapters at each end of the safety break. These pins prevent the adapters from shifting relative to the main sleeve body, maintaining a leak-proof seal under the mechanical strain of retractor usage. “A Costco test site is one of the most stringent you could possibly test at because of the high throughput and the constant strain the retractors put on the equipment,” Schroeder noted.
Reconnection Without Specialized Tools
A primary differentiator for the 3360VR is its tool-free reconnection design. While competing balance recovery breakaways often require specialized tools or replacement parts following a separation, the 3360VR features a unique in-line latching mechanism.
“The 3360VR can be put back together without any tools; you just have to line things up and push it together by hand,” Schroeder said.
For station owners who prefer to replace hardware rather than reconnect it, the Model 5900 offers the same CARB-certified internal technology in a non-reconnectable format.
The Regulatory Journey
The path to certification involved coordination with several California agencies beyond CARB, including the State Water Board, the Department of Food and Agriculture, the State Fire Marshal, and OSHA.
“It’s a long journey,” said Jeff Deaton, a manufacturing engineer at Husky since 2002 . “Beyond the paperwork, the equipment must pass monthly pressure decay tests for six consecutive months to prove the system remains tight.”
The 3360VR name carries historical weight in the industry, dating back to the mid-1990s. This certification brings a modernized version of a familiar brand back to the California market, where balance vapor recovery systems remain a primary infrastructure for the foreseeable future.
“Balance systems are well-proven and simpler to maintain than vacuum-assist systems,” Deaton said. “With this certification, we are providing a reliable, easier-to-service option for station owners looking to reduce operational maintenance costs.”
