New grassland product guide offers reseeding variety selection advice
UK grass seed breeder Barenbrug is launching the 2027 version of its Barforage Product Guide at this year’s AgriScot show which is being held on Wednesday 18 th November at the Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh. Containing product details for Barenbrug’s entire range of Barforage agricultural grass varieties and seed mixtures, the new guide also contains valuable advice about which grass and non-grass species to choose to improve the productivity, resilience and sustainability of forage production systems. “After one of the hottest and driest summers on record, grass swards throughout the UK, including Scotland, have taken a real beating, with some so badly affected by the drought that they were damaged beyond the point of no return,” explains Barenbrug Account Manager, Matt Clark. “As a result, we’ve seen a noticeable increase in the area of grassland being reseeded or rejuvenated this autumn. And we’re expecting a similar pattern in the spring as farmers continue efforts to build greater resilience and drought tolerance into their grazing and silage platforms by replacing older, less productive swards with fresher, more vigorous and deeper rooting leys. “We’ve therefore updated our Barforage Product Guide to include details of our new varieties and seed mixtures which have been bred and blended to suit the specific needs and requirements of livestock systems throughout the UK and Ireland.”
In addition to an easy-to-use product selector which has been created to help farmers quickly and easily choose the right grass seed mixture for their specific set of circumstances, the new guide also provides guidance for choosing an appropriate multi-species seed mixture. “With everything from simple and straightforward Italian ryegrass mixtures containing as few as just two varieties, to clover-rich options and multi-species mixtures containing everything from ryegrasses and clovers to fescues, Timothy and Cocksfoot, determining which is the most appropriate mixture for a specific purpose can be less than clear cut,” Matt continues. “We’ve therefore simplified the process by including an easy-to-understand product selector which clearly illustrates which species and varieties are included in each mixture and to which regions and purposes they are best suited.”
The new guide also contains details of Barenbrug’s range of brassicas, legumes and herbs, as well as advice about when and how to incorporate them in to the farm’s existing rotation. “Beyond grass mixtures, our wider range of seed options includes stubble turnips, forage rape, kale, lucerne, vetch, plantain and chicory,” Matt adds, “as well as environmental and stewardship specific mixtures which are fully compatible with existing Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) and Countryside Stewardship (CS) schemes. “The guide also contains details of our Hunters range which includes value for money grass and clover mixtures for livestock and equine uses. There is also information on our Green Velvet range for home lawns. ”
