A livestock farmer’s experience of repeated faults across several relatively new tractors has prompted a wider debate about whether modern machinery is properly matched to the short, dirty and stop-start work common on livestock units.

The Farming Forum conversation began after the farmer described brake, electrical, hydraulic, emissions-system and engine concerns across three dealer-maintained tractors. The contributor said the farm’s older Landini remained available while newer machines were out of action, before asking: “Are we just unlucky or are modern tractors not designed for working on livestock farms?”
The conversation attracted 116 visible contributions, 4,231 views and 231 reactions between 28 and 30 August. That equates to an average of 1.99 reactions per contribution. It offers a detailed picture of operational concerns, but it is not a representative reliability survey and does not establish manufacturer-wide defects.
Brakes and towing dominate
Braking and towing was the most common classified theme, appearing in 37 contributions, or 31.9% of the conversation. Participants discussed steep ground, high-speed tractors, trailer compatibility, maintenance and driving technique.
One contributor, marco, offered the plainest rule of thumb: “One thing I was always told and still practice is go down the hill the same speed you can go up it.” Other contributors questioned whether the brakes fitted to trailers had kept pace with faster tractors and heavier road work.
That distinction matters beyond the conversation. NFU and BAGMA guidance says trailer braking systems must be suitable for the intended weight and speed. It warns that buying a trailer with incorrect brakes can overwork the tractor’s system and lead to premature tractor-brake failure.
HSE states that safety-critical components, including brakes and steering, must be kept in efficient working order. GOV.UK guidance similarly says tractor owners must ensure roadworthiness before public-road use, even where an agricultural tractor is exempt from periodic roadworthiness testing.
Livestock work presents an awkward duty cycle
Maintenance and driving appeared in 30 contributions, while workload and warm-up issues appeared in seven. Farmers described tractors moving between feeding, loader work, towing and brief yard jobs, often with several operators and limited time at sustained engine load.
Some participants suggested that modern emissions and electronic systems are less comfortable with short operating periods, moisture and contamination than simpler machines. AdBlue is used in selective catalytic reduction systems to reduce nitrogen-oxide emissions; individual reports of faults should not be read as evidence that the technology itself fails across the sector.
The conversation also included suggestions that emissions equipment should be removed or disabled. Those comments are not endorsed here. Operators should follow legal requirements and manufacturer guidance, and should address faults through competent servicing rather than unverified alterations.
Reliability includes the response to failure
Warranty and dealer support appeared in 11 contributions. T C summarised the commercial point: “They all break, it is how you are looked after when they do that matters.” For a livestock unit relying on a small tractor fleet for daily feeding and handling, the availability of a replacement machine, parts and a capable technician can matter as much as the original specification.
That helps explain why some participants favoured long warranty and service packages. Others preferred older tractors supported by an independent mechanic and kept a spare machine available. Aspiring Peasants wrote: “I think on a livestock farm you want the simplest tractor with the least electrics and emissions system you can get, plus a good self employed ‘man with a van’ to look after it.”
The case for older equipment was not uncontested. Livestock 1 cautioned that farmers can look back “with rose tinted glasses”, noting that age itself brings repairs and that suitable older tractors can be difficult to find at sensible prices.
A mixed emotional picture
The conversation was more diagnostic than furious. Structured classification found 59 neutral contributions, representing 50.9% of the total, alongside 39 negative contributions (33.6%) and 18 positive contributions (15.5%). Negative wording attracted 2.18 reactions on average, compared with 2.00 for positive and 1.86 for neutral contributions.
Those results describe emotional tone within this single conversation. They do not measure satisfaction with particular manufacturers or prove that modern tractors are less reliable than older models.
Match the system to the job
The practical conclusion is less dramatic than a verdict for old or new machinery. Livestock farms need a complete system matched to their work: tractor specification, trailer brakes, operating speed, daily checks, maintenance intervals, operator training, competent support and a realistic downtime plan.
The conversation leaves manufacturers and dealers with a useful question. If a tractor is marketed for mixed livestock work, how well do its emissions controls, electrics, braking, service access and support package cope with repeated short jobs, contamination and several drivers? Farmers, meanwhile, still carry the non-negotiable responsibility to keep tractors and trailers roadworthy and safety-critical systems maintained.
